Mugabe burial in Zimbabwe 'sometime next week' - family spokesman

Zimbabwe's former President Robert Mugabe will not be buried at a national monument for liberation heroes in the capital, Harare, but at his village early next week, his family said.

At the time of the attempted coup in Zimbabwe in 2017, he was ZANU-PF national commissar and mentioned in an interview with the departed president as one of the senior party officials who sought refuge at one of Mr Mugabe's residences.

After his body arrived home, though, Mugabe's final burial place became a point of dispute between his family and government.

These included that his wife Grace must never leave the casket bearing his remains until his burial.

Mnangagwa made the remarks at the Blue Roof in Harare on Friday.

His family want him to rest in his rural home, but the government has declared him a "national hero" and reserved a grave for him at the Heroes' Acre shrine just outside Harare.

Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF party denounced Mugabe previous year when he vowed to vote for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa in elections held in July.

On Wednesday, Zimbabweans lined the streets of the capital to catch a glimpse of the hearse as it travelled from the airport to the late president's mansion.

"To that end, we confirm that honourable Walter Chidakwa may communicate our position with relevant authorities to ensure that we develop a programme that conforms to the wishes of the lat Mugabe".

"We are ready and willing to work with the government to develop a programme for the funeral and burial of the late Robert Gabriel Mugabe which is in conformance to his wishes on how his mortal remains will be interred", the family said.

Mugabe's body was expected to go on display at Rufaro Stadium on Thursday and again on Friday before a funeral service to be attended by global dignitaries at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

A family statement demanded that Grace, who was once a rival to Mnangagwa for the presidency, should be front and centre during the funeral.
