The Modern Era covers all players that played after the 1970 season.

Finalists from 2019 who did not get enough support to be among the five modern-era players selected are wide receiver Isaac Bruce; running back Edgerrin James; offensive linemen Alan Faneca, Tony Boselli and Steve Hutchinson; defensive lineman Richard Seymour; and safeties John Lynch and Steve Atwater. He holds the franchise record for field goals made (495) and points scored (2,150).

In his 11-year National Football League career - the first seven of which he spent in Indianapolis - James was named to four Pro Bowls and rushed for 12,246 yards, which ranks 13th on the all-time list. Brown now works as a color analyst on Detroit Lions radio broadcasts. Spielman was named to four Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team during his time in Detroit.

Troy Polamalu is a nominee for the first time, this being the first year the safety is eligible for the Hall of Fame. As part of the NFL's centennial celebration, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will induct 20 members in 2020.

12, the Hall released a list of 122 modern-era players that will be considered for induction in its next class. The selection committee for this year's class includes football historians, current voters and Hall of Famers. The group will include five Modern-Era players to come from the list announced today in addition to 10 Seniors (a player who has been retired for more than 25 seasons), three Contributors (an individual other than a player or coach) and two Coaches. Those selected will be formally inducted with ceremonies taking place between August 6-9 and September 16-19 of 2020.

New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame defensive tackle La'Roi Glover and Dome Patrol stalwart Sam Mills are under consideration for the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The list of former 49ers who are nominees for the 2020 class includes Jeff Garcia, Ricky Watters, Brent Jones, Bryant Young, Merton Hanks and Tim McDonald.
