Democratic candidates debate fixes for USA education

Sanders, who has been praised by Biden as being honest with the American people that their taxes would go up if the country moves to "Medicare for All", weighed in by citing the costs the country would bear if the nation does not move to Medicare for All. "That's the big difference - I'm fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama and you're not". Amy Klobuchar said, drawing applause from the audience.

California Senator Kamala Harris, for example, used the fighting that erupted around her as an opportunity to cast herself as a unifying candidate who could simply beat Trump.

The Democrats' primary contest has been remarkably stable, but the debate came at a pivotal point in the campaign, as more voters begin to pay closer attention to politics.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, for example, plugged his own Medicare buy-in proposal while lambasting the left alternative as "my way or the highway." Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen.

Sidestepping the opportunity to attack Biden, Warren chose to be gracious - complimenting the work of the Obama administration on health care.

As Sanders noted that citizens of the USA spend much more on health care than Canadians or people in other countries, Biden interrupted, "This is America".

Castro, who served as Obama's housing chief, kept the pressure on the front-runner.

Still, the debate offered possible previews of future lines of attack against Warren, particularly as other moderate candidates tried subtly to suggest that her ideas were too liberal. At 76, Biden would be the oldest president ever elected to a first term.

"Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago?"

"I can't believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in, and now you're saying they don't have to buy in", Castro said.

"The senator says she's for Bernie, well I'm for Barack", Biden said, before accusing Warren of failing to explain how she would pay for the massive expansion of government financing for health care.

Eight other candidates did not qualify for this debate, but will have another shot to make the one next month in Ohio.

Besides the infighting, viewers saw the diversity of the modern Democratic Party.

In an emotional moment, O'Rourke said that there weren't enough ambulances at times to take all the wounded to the hospital. Warren and Sanders, the candidates on stage Thursday night include Minnesota Sen.

Meanwhile, Trump noted he'd be in Baltimore at a Republican retreat during the debate and wasn't sure he'd get a chance to watch.

Instead of signing up to back the Sanders-authored plan, like a majority of the Democrat field, Biden has proposed expanding Obamacare through a public option.

"Our problems didn't start with Donald Trump", Castro said in his opening statement. "I hear this large savings my friend from Vermont thinks that the employer is going to give back if you negotiate as a union all these years, got a cut in wages because you got insurance".

The leading Democratic candidates may not have another chance to face off for quite some time.
