GM Recalls 3.5 Million US Vehicles for Braking Issue

This new programming will allow the vehicle, once vacuum assist is gone, to better utilize its hydraulic brake boost assist function.

General Motors is recalling nearly 3.5 million SUVs and pickup trucks because their brakes may suddenly become hard to use, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

They say a pump in the power-assist brakes can malfunction and put out less vacuum power, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash. GM did not immediately explain why the Canadian recall occurred more than two months before it called back the vehicles in the United States.

In late June, GM recalled 310,000 vehicles in Canada for the same issue.

The recall, which covers 2014-2018 model year vehicles, including some Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon vehicles, was triggered because the amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time, GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in documents posted Wednesday.

The following are the vehicles in the GM recall 2019.

The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating in November of past year.

The millions of trucks and SUVs have a brake issue that GM said resides in aging pumps in the brake system. Starting September 6, unlucky vehicle owners are being notified if their truck or SUV is part of the recall. Asked why it took that long to do the recall, Flores said only that the company has been co-operating with NHTSA and providing data.

Drivers could feel a vibration in the brake pedal or a change in pressure required to push the brake pedal if their trucks have the vacuum pump problem. He said he didn't know the cost.
