McIlroy named PGA Tour player of the year

After playing exclusively in the United States until July, skipping the Irish Open at Lahinch, McIlroy racked up 14 top-10 finishes in the U.S. and vowed to repeat his US-based schedule in 2020 before admitting that with a May 28-31 date likely for the Irish Open in 2020, he'd "definitely" play if such a move is confirmed.

On Wednesday, the Golden Bear himself delivered the news to a visibly stunned McIlroy, who has won the award twice before (2012, 2014). Having covered multiple Players Championships at TPC Sawgrass, I can say that almost every top player prepares for it just like a major championship.

The rest of the year made up for it. Or maybe McIlroy did not want to admit he voted for Koepka, just what you'd expect from a player growing increasingly humble and grounded despite a swollen bank account and a hard-earned knack for hitting 340-yard drives.

The FedExCup champion was voted by his peers the 2019 PGA Tour Player of the Year, the tour announced on Wednesday.

Koepka, who two weeks ago was named PGA of America Player of the Year, was considered the front-runner for the award after finishing in the top-five at all four majors, including at the PGA Championship where he picked up his fourth major title.

Perhaps it tells us that PGA Tour pros consider a win at the Players Championship equal in weight to a win at a major.

I'm guessing eyes rolled when Monahan introduced McIlroy on the call by labeling those "landmark victories" in another example of the tour's desperation to elevate events needing no artificial elevating.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland lines up a putt during the final round the final round of the European Masters golf tournament in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Sunday, September 1, 2019. He won the PGA Championship, joining Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners since the PGA switched to stroke play in 1958.

No. Not even McIlroy expected McIlroy to beat out Koepka for the honor.

DeChambeau said he planned to play four tournaments before the Presidents Cup and will be hoping for the same kind of early-season success he had previous year when he won his first tournament of the campaign at TPC Summerlin last November. His 21st and final PGA Tour victory came in Greensboro's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro in 2015, his third win at that tournament over a 23-year span. Players just don't feel only four weeks are important.

Sungjae Im of South Korea was voted PGA Tour rookie of the year. Only Woods (12 in 2000) had more in majors in a single season.
