South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said a final farewell at the casket of late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe

Former president Robert Mugabe is reported to have offered ailing Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga to take over him at the height of the coup that removed him from power and led to the ascendance of Emmerson Mnangagwa to the presidency in November 2017.

The nephew says it will be a private family burial and that details including the day are still being worked out.

Mugabe died last week in Singapore at the age of 95.

A government spokesman did not immediately respond.

Although Roman Catholic priest father Fidelis Mukonori was the mediator between the army and the Mugabe family during the power negotiations, Mugabe revealed that he sent former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono on the task to convince VP Chiwenga.

Zimbabweans have been split over the death of a man who some still praise for ending white-minority rule and widening access to health and education to the poor black majority.

But many Zimbabweans will remember his tyrannical leadership and economic mismanagement that forced millions to escape a country crippled by hyper-inflation and shortages of food, drugs and fuel.

"We are happier now that he is gone".

The government wants him interred at a national shrine on Sunday.

Mugabe's legacy is also marked by a crackdown known as Gukurahundi, which killed an estimated 20,000 alleged "dissidents", and his violent seizure of white-owned farms that made him an global pariah.

The casket of former president Robert Mugabe is carried by the presidential guard to an air force helicopter for transport to a stadium where it will lie in state, at his official residence in the capital Harare, Zimbabwe. Heads of state expected to attend the funeral include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Kenya's Uhuru Kenyatta.

A massive fuel price hike this year sparked nationwide protests which left at least 17 people dead after soldiers opened fire.
