Terrell Roberts, ex-NFL player, shot dead in grandmother's backyard

Former Oregon State defensive back Terrell Roberts, who returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Beavers' 41-9 Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame in 2001, was shot and killed at his grandmother's home Wednesday.

The suspect was reportedly described as a bald, bearded black man between 20 and 35 years old and weighing around 250 pounds, wearing a black shirt.

Police found Roberts dead in the backyard with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Witnesses reported seeing Roberts stumble into the backyard after a "disturbance" in the garage, Melgoza said.

A spokesperson at the Richmond Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Before that, he played college football at Oregon State University.

Roberts played two seasons for the Bengals in 2003-04.

News of Roberts' death began spreading on social media early Thursday, prompting tributes from former teammates. 'Prayers to his family and friends during this hard time'. He was so proud of his son!

Besides his friends from the football community, Roberts' family also took a moment to remember the former NFL player.

Roberts, 38, was "not mixed up in anything bad" and had no known enemies, relatives said.
