Born Edward Joseph Mahoney in Brooklyn, New York, he briefly served as a member of the NYPD before moving out to California in 1968 to try his hand in the music business. He released 11 albums throughout his career, spoofed his own hits in TV commercials, and recently appeared in his own reality TV show "Real Money" on AXS TV. He enjoyed his biggest hit in 1986, the duet Take Me Home Tonight with legendary girl group singer Ronnie Spector, which reached No. 4 of the Billboard Hot 100. His daughter, Jesse Money, chose to follow in her father's footsteps as a musician and began joining her father on tour as a backup singer in the latter part of his career.

Rick Springfield also paid tribute to Money on Twitter. He had few successes after the 1980s, but he continued to tour and record, and for decades would open the summer concert season at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. Money was 70 years old.

Money is survived by his wife Laurie and five children.
