In Toronto, Extinction Rebellion protesters blocked the Bloor Street Viaduct by lying down in the middle of the street.

Simultaneous protests took place in countries around the world, from New Zealand through Colombia to the Gambia.

Activists say they expect the protests to be as much as five times bigger than ones held in April, which brought major disruption to London and saw more than 1,100 arrests.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney criticized the protest on Twitter, saying the protesters were "delaying commute for hundreds in Edmonton trying to get to work & take kids to school".

The force said in a statement: "As of 08:00hrs this morning there have been a total of 21 arrests in connection with the Extinction Rebellion protests".

The National Police in Madrid says 33 activists have been taken to their premises and three have been arrested for resisting orders by anti-riot officers. Tobias Eule says the number appears quite high and supposes it may well be meant to motivate those already in the group: "As a rule, protest movements tend to be successful when they can set down strategically important public markers and then force legal changes through the courts, administrators, or the legislature".

"We are out of time, there is none left, we have to act now", said a protester called Benjamin.

It has drafted in specialist police teams from around Britain while the officers will move from eight hour to 12 hour shifts from today, to free as many officers as possible from regular duties.

A total of 18 people were arrested as a result of the protest.

The arrests are in addition to those over the weekend, with eight people arrested on Saturday - seven on suspicion of conspiracy to cause public nuisance, and the eighth on suspicion of obstructing police.

Extinction Rebellion, the group behind the protest, plans to have its members lie down across the four lanes of road shortly after 8 a.m. ET.

"I'm in a privileged position", said Joel, one of the activists locked to the funeral auto on Trafalgar Square who said he was willing to get detained. "But this is a public health emergency, and they aren't acting as fast as they should".

Founded in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2018, Extinction Rebellion has quickly grown to become an worldwide movement, and says it has branches in some 70 countries around the world.

"I think most Canadians believe this is an important thing", he said. "They stand on our shoulders".

Val Harvey said: "I'm 81 years old and I've been on an ecological and environmentalist journey for a long time".

The protesters marched down to the bridge toll plaza waving flags and signs before congregating in an area near the tolls as police cruisers blocked traffic on routes leading to the bridge.

"How could a responsible teacher not support her in demanding a hopeful future?" I also have two daughters of my own. "I think people would disagree with disruption, and I don't blame them".
