Beth Cunningham works in the media industry and has taken time off work due to mental health-related reasons; however, her employer was unaware of the true reason behind her absence. Have you faced stigma surrounding mental illness? Very often, people's mental health issues are intertwined with their home life, relationships and their capacity to manage at work. Untreated, mental illness can contribute to higher medical expenses, poorer performance at school and work, fewer employment opportunities and increased risk of suicide.

That's the message from Site Safe, New Zealand's largest construction health and safety organisation, which is driving changes to improve mental health, including creating a new award to recognise businesses which go above and beyond to support their workers. When we are free of depression, anxiety, excessive stress and worry, addictions, and other psychological problems, we are more able to live our lives to the fullest. Approximately 15 per cent of adults age 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder, according to the World Health Organization.

This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week in Canada, which coincides with World Mental Health Day focusing on suicide prevention on October 10. During this week, advocates across the nation come together to raise their voices in support of mental health and to speak out against stigma.

The theme selected for this year's Day is 'Suicide Prevention.

Let's make sure our community knows how important mental health awareness is, how important mental illness is to talk about (let's wipe out stigma) and how easy it is to get help when struggling with mental illness.
