Apple's AR Headset Expected in Second Quarter of 2020

CNET reported past year that Apple was working on an AR headset slated for release in 2020.

Apple may be getting close to launching its long-awaited augmented reality headset, according to an influential analyst.

According to a note from TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), mass production of Apple's headset could begin in Q4 of 2019 in preparation for a release slated for sometime in Q2 2020.

Later on, Kuo expects Apple to partner with third-pary makers to build an AR headset, which will rely on an iPhone for the data processing and connectivity, but will provide its own screens (AR is not like VR, you cant use a phone screen).

Apple has been expected for some time to release the iPhone SE 2 and the new iPad Pro.

Apple's headset is rumoured to be an accessory to the iPhone rather than a standalone device, with some kind of wireless connection allowing Apple to leverage the iPhone's processor in order to power the headset's display.

Kuo said that the new iPhone SE will use the iPhone 8's body, which would make it an affordable alternative to Apple's recently-launched iPhone 11 range. However, the underlying design of the headset is still unknown and it remains to be seen whether it would be something to the tune of Microsoft's Hololens or perhaps something more akin to Google Glasses.

Apple CEO Tim Cook made comments in 2016 that for a significant portion of the population in developed countries and eventually all countries, augmented reality experiences will be like "eating three meals a day".
