Red-hot Daniil Medvedev beats Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach Shanghai final

Roger Federer 'David Goffin was so much better than at the US Open'

The confident Russian, through to his ninth final of the year, outlasted sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 7-6 (5), 7-5.

"Making six [finals] in a row, including three Masters 1000's and one Grand Slam, is something I could never dream of, to be honest", said Medvedev.

The next generation of youngsters made their mark at the Shanghai Masters as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev knocked out former champions Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer respectively, booking their semi-final spots on Friday.

"I'm happy because I was losing to him last week and I was playing really good also", 10th-seeded Fognini said. "He was backing up his serve with really good, aggressive first shots in the rally", Japan Open victor Djokovic told reporters.

"I'm looking forward to it and hopefully I can play some good tennis".

The Russian has now won 28 of his last 31 matches including two titles in this run that innocently began with the Washington title in July.

If that was a bold claim, Tsitsipas also said: "I honestly feel like they are more threatened than I am".

"I just gave him enough time to really dictate the play from back of the court, and, you know, he deserved to win".

Medvedev has won a tour-best 58 matches this season, 43 in straight sets.

"The most important thing is to keep it going as long as I can".

Medvedev will meet Alexander Zverev who raced past US Open semifinalist Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first final since May in Geneva.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer saved five set points in the first set as he scrambled to a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over 13th-seeded David Goffin and advanced to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals.

"We've played some fantastic matches, all going my way until now". However, Tsitsipas has had little success on the Medvedev serve in these matches, winning a mere 32% of points on return, and he'll need to dial this up to a decent extent if he's going to cause an underdog victory at [3.05].

Zverev, who has burst into life after a hard season, missed five match points in the second set, with Federer finding some magic to recover from 40-0 at 6-5 and then saving two more match points in the tie-break. "The last few months he's probably the best player in the world".
