Scott Morrison Has Enlisted Fellow Scott Scotty Cam To Be His Tradie Posterboy

The prime minister on Thursday announced the host of TV renovation show The Block will be Australia's first national careers ambassador.

AUSTRALIA'S two highest profile Scotts are joining forces to build the number of tradies, with Scott Morrison enlisting Scott Cam to get more young people on the tools.

The Gold Logie winner's role will be to highlight how practical and technical training can lead to high-paying jobs.

Labor's education and training spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek is not rapt with the high profile hire.

Mr Morrison said university, which had become the default expectation for young people, wasn't the only path to success.

"Scott Cam's a good bloke, but if the Liberals were serious about fixing the skills crisis they've created, they'd stop hiring celebrities and start funding TAFE and apprentices", she said.

Michaelia Cash, employment and skills minister, said Cam will work with the National Careers Institute, but shied away from discussing how much the government was coughing up to employ the country's most famous "tradie".

"It's time we broadened our view and recognised the many other successful avenues available to young Australians and talked about the opportunities in fast growing industries like health and construction through technical and skills education".

Scott Morrison says he wants to see "more Australians become plumbers, electricians and bakers than lawyers and consultants". "I would like to see more of them going on to become their own boss".

Ms Cash said the Coalition planned to create more than 1.25 million jobs over the next five years, and to roll out a $100 billion infrastructure investment.

"To take advantage of this, we will need to make sure people and businesses have access to the right skills at the right time, and understand how their skills relate to current and emerging career pathways", Minister Cash said.

She said Cam would help Australians at "all ages and stages" to make informed decisions about learning, training and work.

'Working with the National Careers Institute, Scott will make sure individuals and businesses can take advantage of the pathways on offer, ' she said.

HIA has been encouraged by the COAG Skills Council's adoption of a vision for skills in Australia at their August meeting, on the back of the Government's commitment to vocational education in the federal budget.
