Shanghai Masters: Novak Djokovic beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas in quarter-finals

Chalk one up for the young guns who Friday in Shanghai dispatched two of the titans of tennis.

Federer was not the only big scalp to fall on Friday as Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed an impressive win against Novak Djokovic. "It was a very hard victory mentally too".

"(Or) maybe in the following year, but in the next two years, I think 100 percent". "I take a lot of positives from this into the final tomorrow".

Medvedev broke the Greek - who repeatedly tried to gee up the crowd - in the third game of the second set.

He said: "The five match points I had in the second set - them going away and still knowing I can win in three sets is very important, especially against someone like Roger because normally he doesn't let go of these kind of matches".

"He played very well after his serve", said Djokovic.

"He was backing up his serve with really good and aggressive first shots in the rally. I just gave him enough time to really dictate the play from the back of the court and he deserved to win".

The confident Russian, through to his ninth final of the year, outlasted sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 7-6 (5), 7-5. "He's a very mental player, I would say". So, this win over Novak is a boost. Tomorrow is going to be a new challenge for me. I hope I feel well.

"I always dreamt of beating those players and I see each match when I go out on the court as an opportunity to bring the best out of me".

The sixth seed won his first encounter with the world number one at the Rogers Cup previous year and gained revenge for a defeat in their second meeting in Madrid this season, having also beaten Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in 2019.

"Obviously it was an important match".

"I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was a month ago, and much closer than a couple of months ago". "So it's all good that the umpire got involved too".

Zverev will next meet Italy's 23-year-old Matteo Berrettini, who defeated China Open champion Dominic Thiem 7-6 (8) 6-4.

It is the first time an ATP Masters 1000-level tournament has had four semifinalists 23 and under since Carlos Moya (22), Mariano Zabaleta (21), Nicolas Lapentti (22) and Marcelo Rios (23) reached the last four in Hamburg in 1999. "It's exciting. They're great". I will give myself the best chance to be in the final on Sunday, and I think adding another tournament is not the best idea.
