"A utility company in your area announced they may turn off power in some areas of Northern California beginning October 9 as part of public safety power shut-offs, which may affect power to charging options", the message stated, according to social media posts from Tesla owners. PG&E warned the outages it's implementing might last a full week in some areas of the state. "We recommend charging your Tesla to 100 per cent today to ensure that your drive remains uninterrupted".

PG&E, which filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of this year burdened by the devastating 2018 wildfires in California, began on Wednesday morning the first phase of its three-phase Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in large parts of its service areas in northern and central California.

Despite the reported problems, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Oct 2 that customer response has been positive and that Smart Summon has been used over 550,000 times by Tesla drivers.

"All Tesla Supercharger stations in regions affected by California power outages will have Tesla Powerpacks within next few weeks". He tweeted the company will adding solar arrays and batteries to its Supercharger charging stations "as fast as possible". "Just waiting on permits", the executive said in a Twitter post.

"Also adding Tesla Solar to our Supercharger stations as fast as possible".

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has started a planned power shutoff on an unprecedented scale in Northern California to reduce the risk of wildfires amid dry and windy weather, the San Francisco-based utility said on Wednesday.

The advisory is significant for customers in the Bay Area, where Tesla's premium electric cars are a common sight. PG&E said the outages would affect almost a million customers in California across more than half of the state's 58 counties, the most extensive planned blackout ever for the state.

Wildfires continue to rage while new ones have broken out in both northern and southern California.
