"I'm particularly proud to be able to commit to offering over 50 Thomas Cook captains the opportunity to join TUI Airways and continue to fly customers on their holidays".

David Chapman, the official receiver of Thomas Cook, said: "This represents an important step in the liquidation process, as we seek to realise the company's assets".

At the moment, Hays Travel has no branches in the Borders, its nearest ones being in Hexham and Morpeth in Northumberland.

The latest move involves re-opening retail premises that will complement Hays Travel's own 190 shops across the UK.

"Our staff will say the web is their friend, while Thomas Cook retail staff would have said the web is their enemy".

The news that Hays Travel has bought all 555 of the shops Thomas Cook owns across Britain has been welcomed with a sigh of relief by many people, including Harrogate, not least by this famous brand's anxious staff.

As of now, the Thomas Cook shop located in the prestigious shopping area of James Street is closed.

Commenting on the acquirement, Hays Travel managing director John Hays said: "Our staff were devastated to hear about Thomas Cook and we all immediately felt we wanted to help".

Wednesday's announcement was welcomed by the British government and travel industry trade union the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA).

Jim Tucker, partner at administrator KPMG, also added that the Hays deal "provides re-employment opportunities for a significant number of former Thomas Cook employees, and secures the future of retail sites up and down the United Kingdom high street".

"It's a good thing for those working in those Thomas Cook shops", Tanzer told me before he hurried back to his group.

Britain's government on Monday completed the country's biggest peacetime repatriation, returning 140,000 UK-based Thomas Cook customers stranded overseas by the company's bankruptcy.

Frank Meysman and Peter Fankhauser, who were chairman and chief executive when the 178-year-old travel operator went down last month, will appear before the business select committee on Tuesday.

The company's demise sparked 22,000 job losses worldwide. Its biggest shareholder was China's Fosun Group.
