The Indian Express newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying Modi would urge Xi to be more "sensitive" to India's concerns, and to "explain to the Chinese president the reasons behind Delhi's decision on Kashmir".

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed trade-related issues, including how to enhance bilateral trade volume, he said.

Local people dressed in folk costumes sang and danced to welcome the Chinese president and the delegation.

That meeting went beyond schedule, with the leaders talking for two and a half hours.

Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

However, the following year Xi and Modi patched things up in China's Wuhan.

Xi and Modi held their second informal meeting in the southern Indian city of Chennai following their first in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in April previous year.

"I don't think either India or China has this kind of mechanism with any other leader in the world for the leaders to meet informally and to speak and discuss without a set agenda", he said. "Let us also ensure we remain fit and healthy".

"We engaged in a candid discussion as friends in this heart-to-heart discussion on bilateral relations", Xi added.

"Last year there were 134 million Chinese tourists traveling overseas, but only 240,000 went to India".

Modi gave a personal tour to Xi of the Shore Temple, dating back to the seventh and eighth century and other ancient monuments that are part of Unesco's world heritage sites and which were emptied of all visitors for the two-day summit.

"Both leaders said that these were large countries and that radicalisation was a matter of concern to both, and that both would work together to see that radicalisation and terrorism did not affect the fabric of our multicultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious societies", Gokhale told reporters.

Misri highlighted their cooperation in setting up the New Development Bank under the BRICS grouping of nations.

The New Development Bank and the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank are important contributions to development and investment finance, he said.
