The Cardinals host the Washington Nationals in Game 1 of the NLCS on Friday night. He was hitting seventh in the batting order.

The Cardinals and Nationals understand the challenges of hard times.

Which means pitcher Michael Wacha isn't on it. That came in handy as José Martínez caused some trouble for Sean Doolittle in the bottom of the inning, delivering a two-out, two-run double to snap the Cardinals' scoreless streak and bring them within a couple runs of tying the game. Scherzer then struck out Marcell Ozuna, and got Yadier Molina to ground into a double-play to end the inning. Patrick Corbin and Daniel Hudson worked in tandem to retire the side in the ninth and capture the Nationals' second straight win of the series.

Washington catcher Kurt Suzuki is in the starting lineup for Game 2 of the NL Championship Series after being sidelined by a head injury. Adam Wainwright is on the mound for the Cardinals as they try to avoid an 0-2 hole before the series shifts to Washington D.C. Jack Flaherty leads the team with a 2.75 ERA.
