American Patrick Day is taken out of the ring on a stretcher after being knocked out in his super-welterweight bout against Charles Conwell at Wintrust Arena in Chicago

U.S. fighter Patrick Day was hospitalised after a brutal knockout by unbeaten Charles Conwell in a super welterweight bout in Chicago on Saturday.

DAZN, which broadcast the fight, reported that Day had not regained consciousness approximately an hour later and was on a breathing tube.

United States sports broadcaster ESPN reported that Day had emergency brain surgery and went into a coma, but did not say whether he fell into the coma or it was induced by the doctors.

His company, Matchroom Boxing, which organised the event, also posted to say Day had "been taken directly to hospital".

British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wrote on social media: "Deepest prayers with Patrick right now". Day's head bounced off the canvas after Conwell hit him with a right to the ear followed by a left hook. Referee Celestino Ruiz called off the fight at one minute, 46 seconds of the round.

Day was down for several minutes while receiving medical attention and was eventually taken out of the ring on a stretcher and to a hospital.

Day (17-4-1) is a former WBC continental Americas super welterweight champion who suffered his second consecutive loss after winning six fights in a row from April 2016 to February 2019.

Day was fighting on the undercard of Russian Dmitry Bivol's World Boxing Association light-heavyweight world title defence against Lenin Castillo.
