Officials advised consumers to handle ground beef carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning.

A general supplier of beef has not been identified, according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef.

Public health and regulatory officials and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service are now investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Dublin infections linked to ground beef, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of those sickened, eight were hospitalized, including the unidentified Californian who died.

The CDC said it has not yet been able to trace the outbreak to a single ground beef supplier, but it strongly suspects that is the case. However, at the same time they are asking for caution when preparing the meat, and reminding everyone that ground beef should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Refrigerate or freeze raw ground beef within 2 hours after purchase. "This outbreak is a reminder that raw and undercooked ground beef can have germs in it that can make you sick and can contaminate areas where food is prepared", says the CDC in their report.

Don't eat raw or undercooked ground beef. Use a food thermometer to make sure the meat has reached this safe internal temperature. The bacteria can also spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, according to the CDC, include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that last up to a week, in most cases resolving itself without treatment. After handling the raw meat, thoroughly wash your hands and any utensils and surfaces that came into contact with the ingredient, the CDC says.

Ten people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Dublin have been reported in Kansas, California, Colorado, Texas, Iowa and Oklahoma.

The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing and no further details were immediately available.
