Mayor Patricia Arce escorted from scene by police.

Shouting, "murderer, murderer", the mob pushed the mud-covered pol to the ground and forcibly cut her hair before she was rescued by police and taken to a local hospital, the network said.

Chanting "murderess, murderess", the opposition protesters attacked Vinto Mayor Patricia Arce - associated with the ruling Mas party - and got hold of her before dousing her in red paint, marching her to a bridge where they forced her to kneel.

In nearby Vinto, an opposition mob stormed the municipal headquarters and dragged the mayor, Patricia Arce, into the street before setting the building ablaze.

The mayor of a small town in Bolivia has become the latest victim of violence in the country that has seen violent street clashes intensifying over the country's disputed election almost three weeks ago.

Government critics, meanwhile, pointed the finger at supporters of President Evo Morales, whose October election win was marred by allegations of fraud after an abrupt halt in the vote count and an unusual swing in the leftist leader's favor.

It was alleged that the two protesters had been killed during clashes with President Morales' supporters.

The woman was forced on her knees to sign a resignation letter before being paraded across town for hours.

Amid shouts of "murderess, murderess" masked men dragged her through the streets barefoot to the bridge.

Her office was set alight and the windows of the town hall were smashed.

The clashes in Bolivia have continued to escalate this week, with police firing tear gas to push back stone-throwing demonstrators during clashes late Tuesday and early Wednesday as they attempted to march on the presidential palace. Doctors said Guzmán Vasquez had a fractured skull which may have been caused by an explosive device.

The deadly incident on Wednesday happened in the city of Cochabamba, where 20-year-old student Limbert Guzman was killed in a spate of clashes. Evo Morales of MAS won the election with a reported 10 percent advantage over Mesa, which allowed him to become president without a second round of elections. However, Mesa has rejected the audit arguing that it was agreed without his or his party's input. He's also accused Mesa of staging a coup d'etat.
