Iran downs ‘unknown’ drone over Persian Gulf port

The agency said that Iranian air defense forces hit the drone in the early morning at the port city of Mahshahr, which is in the oil-rich Khuzestan province and lies on the Persian Gulf.

It later said the drone could have been an Iranian model downed during nighttime exercises to test missile systems.

Iran's air defense force has shot down an "unknown" drone in the country's southwest, the official IRNA news agency reported on Friday.

The accidential crash of an Iranian drone in the same province on October 23 prompted newspaper reports that an unidentified foreign aircraft had been shot down.

Citing provincial governor Gholamreza Shariati, it reported that the army had located the wreckage of the drone in a marshy area and opened an inquiry into the incident.

A US military official told Fox News on Friday that all American drones are accounted for and none have been shot down.

The Pentagon official, when asked if any USA drone crashed or malfunctioned in the region on Friday, said: "There is no operation reporting of any (U.S.) drone going down".

In June, Iran shot down an unmanned United States surveillance drone, which the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said was flying over southern Iran - a move that brought the region to the brink of war.

Relations between Iran and the United States have worsened since previous year when President Donald Trump pulled out of Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and reimposed sanctions on the country.

Shariati added that the drone was downed by the Army Air Defense unit in the Southwest and its debris were found in the marshlands in the suburb of Mahshahr.
