Tiger Woods has announced he will be swinging the clubs in Melbourne next month during the President's Cup.

With Els' team boasting only two players in the world top 20 in Australia's No. 17 Adam Scott and Japan's No. 20 Hideki Matsuyama, his young outfit face a huge task to win the trophy for the first time since 1998 against a powerful USA team captained by Tiger Woods.

"I was eligible as a player and the TOUR asked me if I wanted to be captain and I said I want to be a player first", Irwin, the winningest player in PGA TOUR Champions history, said this week.

Woods was introduced as captain in March 2018, when he was just returning from a fourth surgery on his lower back.

Woods memorably secured an elusive 15th major victory at April's US Masters at Augusta National - 14 years after he last donned the famous green jacket.

"It's going to be a lot of work", Woods said.

The decision was hardly a surprise. Meet the group of Americans traveling to Australia.

The Presidents Cup is December 12-15 at Royal Melbourne.

But Woods, the captain of team U.S., said on Friday that he had picked himself among four discretionary picks - Tony Finau, Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland - to complete his 12-man outfit.

Day has dropped to world No.27 after a winless year and has a poor Presidents Cup record of five wins and 11 losses. Names like Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, and of course, Tiger Woods himself.

Woods did not say what kind of contingency plan he had if Koepka couldn't make it. He also left open the option of adding an assistant captain now that he'll be playing. "It's going to be hard, but I also have three awesome assistants in Fred (Couples), Stricks (Steve Stricker) and Zach (Johnson)".

Woods said those three had strong thoughts on him playing, especially Couples.

"Freddie was pretty ardent".

"I just love his game, I've played with him numerous times", Els said.

"It's going to help me more to focus and try to beat him". He said he could play more depending on what the team needs.

The automatic selections to complete the American team were Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar.

The 32-year-old can now check it off his list after worldwide captain Ernie Els named him one of four captain's picks on Wednesday night.

Royal Melbourne is where the global team had its only victory in 1998.

Until today there was still conjecture over whether Woods, the team U.S. captain, would pick himself.

"I do think he will pick himself, I don't think he has any choice", he said.

"Everyone on the team wants to play with Tony", Woods said. "He's made ... nine Cups and he's played in Australia twice in the Presidents Cup, so this will be his third appearance as a player. I find it interesting I'm talking in the third person!"
