The first batch of the Indian pilgrims entered Pakistan on Saturday through the historic Kartarpur corridor which was thrown open ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

He said Kartarpur Corridor was exclusively the initiative of Prime Minister Imran Khan, which was subsequently followed by India after much hesitation.

Earlier today, PM Modi thanked Mr Khan for "understanding the sentiments of India".

FO Spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal was responding to a question on a statement by Director General ISPR where he termed passport a pre-requisite for Indian Sikhs using the Kartarpur Corridor.

Imran Khan added that Pakistan was opening it's hearts to the Sikh community and the corridor initiative went beyond the material and physical, rather it was a spiritual bond.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan broke ground on the Kartarpur Corridor Project on 28 November 2018. Despite tense relations between the two nuclear-armed nations that has persisted since February, the religious project was completed within a year.

The Kartarpur Corridor will connect Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur district with Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan.

The Cabinet had also approved the building and development of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to the global boundary, to facilitate pilgrims from India to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, round the year, in a smooth and easy manner. The discussion on opening the route began in 1998, but numerous rounds of talks did not lead to any results.
