Singles’ Day on 11/11 marks the busiest online shopping event of the year

China's biggest online shopping festival, Singles' Day, got underway at Sunday midnight local time, with e-commerce giant Alibaba saying 91.2 billion yuan ($13 billion) worth of goods were sold in the first hour, compared with 69 billion yuan previous year.

This year's edition of Singles Day is being touted as the largest single day shopping event not only of the year and is expected to generate more sales than Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Thanksgiving Day combined, according to Adobe Analytics.

China's Alibaba is seeking large-scale deployment of a self-developed liquid-cooling technology on the processors in its data center prior to the arrival of the Double 11 shopping spree Monday.

Alibiba's Singles Day isn't just an online shopping festival but also a high-on-glamour affair.

This figure is down from past year, when 76 per cent of Kiwis said they had not heard of the shopping festival.

"The same's likely to be true of Singles' Day, as well".

Alibaba anticipates 500 million shoppers will take part in the 11.11 event this year, up from about 100 million recorded last year. He said Singles' Day kicked off the busy period for the state-owned enterprise.

In 2009 it was turned into a major online shopping "holiday' by e-commerce giant Alibaba and continues to grow in popularity across the globe".

"We have seen Black Friday rapidly emerge into the New Zealand consciousness over the last few years, primarily because New Zealand consumers were visiting overseas websites and Kiwi retailers responded to that in order to keep customers and win business", Harford said.

The 73 per cent of Kiwis who were unaware of it was only slightly down on the previous year, when 76 per cent said they had not heard of Singles' Day. NZ Post completes well over half of these deliveries with more than 78 million parcels delivered a year ago.

President of Fonterra China, Christina Zhu, said Fonterra achieved a strong result in 2018 with an estimated total of $28 million in sales on 11.11.

"NZ Post is expecting another record online shopping season this year and will be upping our capacity to meet the huge number of parcels that are already starting to come through our network - including 185 additional flights, 27 additional trucks, 1,500 additional delivery runs, 200 extra vans and hundreds of extra people to help us get your parcel to you on time", says Bryan.
