He said: 'We remember the many courageous people from Britain and all across the world who put their lives on the line making huge sacrifices in two world wars which cost the lives of millions, and in all other conflicts since.

A host of military and foreign representatives also laid wreaths by the Cenotaph, while other Cabinet ministers and religious leaders were in attendance.

The Queen watched from a balcony as a two minute silence was observed at 11am with the beginning and end marked by the firing of a gun by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were among those who took part in commemorations.

Buglers of the Royal Marines sounded the Last Post before wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by dignitaries.

Following the ceremony, around 10,000 veterans and servicemen and women marched past the Cenotaph.

Just like previous year, it was a royal full house at this important event, with Queen Elizabeth II joined by all four of her children and various members of their families, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Five former prime ministers - Sir John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Theresa Maym - were among those paying tribute.

The Festival commemorates all those who have lost their lives in conflicts, and this year will mark the 75th anniversary of a number of crucial battles of 1944 - Monte Cassino, Kohima and Imphal, and D-Day - with a particular emphasis on the role of the Commonwealth and Allied Forces.

Later today, the National Service of Remembrance will take place at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, which will be attended by President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina.

Thousands of veterans, their medals glinting in the autumn sunshine, performed a traditional march past.
