India Women vs West Indies Women Shafali Verma Smriti Mandhana Power India To 84 Run Victory Over West Indies

Playing in only her fifth T20I, Shafali put the West Indies attack to the sword, blasting six fours and four sixes on way to her maiden fifty at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. While Shafali played a 49-ball 73-run knock, Smriti amassed 67 runs from 46 deliveries.

Gros Islet: 15-year-old Shafali Verma became the youngest Indian cricketer to score a half-century in global cricket, her 49-ball 73 in the first T20 worldwide against West Indies surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's 30-year-old record.

The 15-year-old also became the second-youngest player to score a half-century in T20I format (men and women).

The Haryana teenager shared a record opening stand of 143 - India's highest partnership in women's T20Is - with Smriti Mandhana to help her team post a challenging 185 for four after being asked to take first strike by the hosts.

Shafali was the first to go when she was dismissed by Shakera Selman in the 16th over. Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy too contributed with valuable cameos.

The visitors then returned to restrict West Indies for 101 for 9 to complete the win on Saturday.

In return, West Indies never looked in control and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, thanks to some quality bowling by the Indian bowlers. Chedean Nation (10), Kyshona Knight (12) and Stacy-Ann King (13) couldn't stay long enough as West Indies were looking down the barrel at 86 for 6 in 14.1 over.

Pacer Shikha Pandey (2/22), spin duo of Radha Yadav (2/10) and Poonam Yadav (2/24) claimed two wickets each, while both Deepti Sharma (1/15) and Pooja Vastrakar (1/21) accounted for one wicket.

With the win, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
