Facebook says it removed 3.2B fake accounts in 6 months

Facebook removed more than 11.6 million pieces of content depicting child nudity and sexual exploitation of children on Facebook and 754,000 pieces on Instagram during the third quarter

Millions more were removed from Instagram.

Law enforcement is concerned that Facebook's plans to provide greater privacy to users by encrypting the company's messaging services will hamper efforts to fight child abuse. Following the report's release, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said that the company - the world's biggest social network - gets unfairly criticized for reporting large takedown numbers, but that these accounts actually show Facebook is taking these problems more seriously than competitors are. "It just means we're working harder to identify this content and that's why it's higher", he said on a conference call, CNN reported. The company also removed about 4.4 million pieces involving drug sales during the quarter, it said in a blog post. "In all other cases when our systems detect potential hate speech, they send the post to our review team to determine if it should be removed", explained the company. It says the increase was due to improvements in detection. On Instagram, the company removed a total of 1.68 million pieces of content that encouraged self-injury or suicide. That was up from 841,000 and 609,000 pieces respectively six months earlier.

Facebook has revealed a huge jump in images of child sex abuse uploaded to the website: 11.6 million pieces of content from July to September this year, versus 6.9 million from April to June.

"Starting in Q2 2019, our systems began removing posts automatically when they received very high scores or matched existing hate speech in our database". For example, while all but 3% of suicide and self-harm content is taken down from Facebook without reports from users, Instagram users are still responsible for reporting 21% of the same type of content before it is removed. Facebook proactively identified 98.5% of all terrorism content - including 99% related to al-Qaeda and ISIS.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Facebook says it removed 3.2 billion fake accounts from its service from April to September, up slightly from 3 billion in the previous six months.

The Menlo Park, California-based firm said that over the past six months or so, it has improved its "ability to detect and block attempts to create fake, abusive accounts".
