Microsoft retires Cortana support on iOS and Android

Has Microsoft thrown in the towel

If you live in the UK, Canada, and Australia and have been enjoying Cortana on iOS and Android, then we have some bad news for you.

Cortana is Microsoft's digital assistant, its alternative to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri.

Microsoft will shut down its Cortana app for Android and iOS on January 31, 2020.

Reports started to appear in early 2019 that Microsoft planned to change how Cortana was used fundamentally.

Cortana was released for iOS and Android, and also integrated into the Microsoft Launcher application. It could be possible that Cortana will work in other regions including the U.S. after 31st January. According to Microsoft, this will all make Cortana more helpful, taking into effect on January 31st, 2020.

The company notes that users may still access reminders and lists through Cortana on Windows, and that reminders, lists and tasks are synced automatically to the Microsoft To Do application which is available for mobile devices.

The news comes shortly after the company announced some major Microsoft 365 and Cortana integrations were it's integrating Cortana into other mobile apps like Outlook. The move is quite interesting as Microsoft is still working on a brand-new Cortana app for Windows 10. Microsoft's personal assistant will remain available on Windows 10, of course. In fact, it seems like the Cortana app will continue to exist for those in the U.S. - for now, anyway.

After January 31st, 2020, the Cortana mobile app on your phone will no longer be supported and there will be an updated version of Microsoft Launcher with Cortana removed. For consumers, Cortana will play less and less of a role though in the future.
