Possible 'system intrusion' causes shutdown of La. state websites, internet, email systems

Apparent ‘ransom’ attack cripples state government some services back online

Louisiana state government computers were knocked out following a ransomware attack, the governor said on Monday, as results from the close gubernatorial election in the southern state await certification. "The service interruption was due to OTS' aggressive response to prevent additional infection of state servers and not due to the attempted ransomware attack".

Websites for the Office of the Governor, Louisiana State Legislature, Office of Motor Vehicles, Department of Corrections, the Louisiana Division of Administration, the Department of Transportation & Development, and more were affected, according to local news outlet WAFB9.

WWLTV is reporting that local government employees are using Gmail accounts to communicate until the state's email server comes back online.

Targeted ransomware attacks on banking and finance, government, healthcare, and critical infrastructure are on the rise, with the latest victim being the state government of Louisiana.

Based on public statements, the situation seems to be under control.

Louisiana officials said that while it may take several days for all affected services to be restored, the state does not anticipate any data loss, nor did it pay a ransom. At this time, it's unclear what family of ransomware malware was used in the latest attack, how the ransomware got into the state's systems, and how much amount the attackers have demanded as a ransom.

Louisiana is one of a long list of local jurisdictions that have been bedeviled by ransomware attacks.

This "cybersecurity team" is part of the Louisiana Cybersecurity Commission established by Gov. Edwards in 2017, which includes law enforcement, cybersecurity professionals from the public and private sector, and academia, to provide a coordinated response to cybersecurity attacks.

Louisiana's Office of Technology Services stated that this attack is similar to the attack on Louisiana schools in July that led Governor Edwards to declare a state of emergency.
