AI cameras used to catch drivers with phones

The Australian state of New South Wales rolled out "high definition detection cameras" on Sunday, created to catch drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.

While the system will involve an actual person to review the photos, there are still concerns that the courts will see a huge influx of drivers disputing the fines.

During the test, almost 8.5 million cars were examined and almost 100,000 drivers were caught using their phones illegally.

Over the next three years, 45 portable cameras will be set up across the state, in unknown locations, and without warning signs, CNN affiliate Sky News Australia reported.

Andrew Constance, New South Wales' Minister for Roads said the "world-first" technology would target illegal cell phone use through "fixed and mobile trailer-mounted cameras".

"If they think they can continue to put the safety of themselves, their passengers and the community at risk without outcome they are in for a rude shock". According to a video from the NSW Transport Department, the cameras can work during the day or at night, in any weather or speed zone. After the first three months, drivers caught using their phones illegally will lose five points and be issued a $344 fine.

"Images that the automated system considers likely to contain a driver illegally using a mobile phone are verified by authorised personnel", NSW said on a web page about the cameras.

In the UK, Thames Valley and Hampshire police launched a system earlier this year that can detect mobile phone signals coming from road vehicles. The government caught people texting, using social media apps like Facebook - some even took both their hands off the wheel to type that all-important status message.
