Former Auburn quarterback Heisman winner Pat Sullivan dead at 69

Former Auburn quarterback Pat Sullivan, the 1971 Heisman Trophy victor and later the head coach at TCU and Samford University, died on Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer, the university announced. The former quarterback was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2003 and the statement said he "fought a long and hard battle as a result of his treatments".

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pat Sullivan, one of Auburn's all-time greats on and off the field", Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement.

Sullivan continued to support the Tigers throughout his life and was on the committee that hired Gus Malzahn in 2013. "He was a friend, mentor and a man of great character, who was beloved by many generations of Auburn fans".

Our thoughts are with the Sullivan family and Auburn community.

Sullivan broke 24 Auburn records during his career and was a two-time All-American. He completed 182 of 325 passes in his Heisman campaign for 2,262 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to 13 interceptions (adding two rushing touchdowns).

Sullivan had a standout career with the Tigers, winning a Heisman Trophy in 1971.

But 1971 was perhaps the most memorable year for Sullivan, highlighted by his performance against longtime rival Georgia. Never before in the history of the Southeastern Conference had undefeated teams met so late in the season, AuburnTigers.com said. As a sophomore in 1969, Sullivan emerged as one of college football's elite quarterbacks, passing for almost 1,700 yards with 16 touchdowns. A few weeks, later he won the Heisman. Sullivan and Beasley's uniform numbers, along with 1985 Heisman Trophy victor Bo Jackson's No. 34, are the only three Auburn jerseys to be retired.

A three-sport star at John Carroll Catholic High School, Sullivan signed with Auburn in 1968, before freshmen were eligible to play varsity football.

His jersey number - No. 7 - was retired at the school, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991.

"He was a kind and humble gentleman, who was an Auburn legend", Auburn Director of Athletics Allen Greene said in a statement. He went on to be drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, playing in the National Football League for five seasons between the Falcons and the Redskins. He played four seasons with the Falcons and split one season between the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers.
