SC quarterback Jake Bentley, who started three seasons for the Gamecocks, will transfer for his final year after graduating from the school.

In his announcement, the younger Bentley singled out embattled head coach Will Muschamp - thanking him for "giving me the ability to live out my childhood dream of playing college football at the University of SC". Bentley's name appeared in the NCAA transfer portal shortly after his announcement.

In the 2019 season-opener vs.

Bentley's father - Bobby Bentley - is one of the SC offensive coaches now under fire in the aftermath of the Gamecocks' disastrous 4-8 season (which ended on Saturday with a blowout loss to arch-rival Clemson).

Bentley started the final seven games of his freshman season, going 4-3 with 1,420 yards and nine touchdowns and four interceptions. The Gamecocks installed true freshman Ryan Hilinski at quarterback from that point on, and finished the season at 4-8. The foot injury allowed Bentley to redshirt the season, opening the door for a final year elsewhere.

But a disappointing 7-6 finish and up-and-down performances from Bentley and the offense added strain as Bentley became a scapegoat among the fan base for all of the Gamecocks' offensive struggles.

Bentley opened the season as South Carolina's starting quarterback, but went down with a season-ending foot injury in a Week 1 loss at North Carolina.

But as much negativity as Bentley has had to endure at times - right or wrong, the quarterback always receives too much of the credit and too much of the blame - his career should be remembered more for the highs than the lows. As of this writing, there is no indication as to whether the elder Bentley - who coaches tight ends - will return for the 2020 season.
