Cheng denied the accusation and said police in China questioned him about the role of the U.K in the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. They also found 44 damaged vehicles.

They were the holdouts from roughly 1,000 protesters who had retreated inside the campus after battling police on nearby streets. Other posters told Lam that "it's time to step down". It is unclear whether they have since left or remain somewhere on campus. We didn't encounter anyone. In a statement, PolyU said that it also expects the cordon around campus to be removed by Friday after the government added manpower to expedite the disposal of hazardous materials that were widely scattered. "Our operation objectives are twofold. It's all about the risky items and (evidence-collecting at the) scene of the crime".

The police detained about 1,100 people near the campus Nov 18 and 19.

University President Teng Jin-guang said after touring the campus that only 46 of the arrested were university students.

"I do not have a home in the USA, nor a bank account or a kid attending a school there, therefore the act has nothing to do with me", he said, warning that many American cities including NY and Los Angeles who ran exchange programs with the force would lose opportunities to compare notes on taming riots if they chose to sever ties. "Just like we have done today, solving the problem peacefully".

"We source our supplies from accredited manufacturers across the globe thus the [US act banning exports] will have no effect on us", said Tang.

Demonstrators in Hong Kong are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. Only a small portion of the three million eligible applicants have applied for it.

Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters are celebrating President Donald Trump as their new hero.

He wrote that he had come across about 10 detainees at an interrogation center, who he believed were Hong Kong protesters.

More than 5,800 people have been arrested since the unrest broke out in June over a proposal to allow extraditions to mainland China, the numbers increasing exponentially in October and November as violence escalated.

Speaking on stage, Joshua Wong Chi-fung, secretary-general of the pro-democracy group Demosistō, gave thanks to overseas Hongkongers who had lobbied for years to have the legislation passed in the US Congress and all those who voted in Sunday's District Council elections, which gave an overwhelming victory to the pan-democratic candidates. However, over the past few weeks, the violent clashes between the protesters and security forces intensified, with the election results partially punctuating it.

Another 567 people were arrested in the vicinity of the university.

Some Western nations have backed the protest movement, with the USA even passing legislation that threatens sanctions over China's response to it. Beijing, which recovered the territory from the United Kingdom in 1997, insists that the Hong Kong unrest is purely an internal affair and strongly rejects foreign interference.

On Thursday night, thousands joined a large rally to thank the USA, on its Thanksgiving Day holiday, and to call on other countries to join the U.S.in supporting the protest movement, now in its sixth month.
