Move your Facebook photos to Google Photos

Facebook notes that this is all part of a drive for data portability, and that the transfer tool is based on code developed through the company's participation in the open source Data Transfer Project (launched by Google back in 2018, with partners including Facebook and Twitter, as well as Microsoft and Apple). The idea is an internet where eventually, people aren't locked into a single platform and can move their data freely from one service to the next.

In an attempt to get the so-called Data Transfer Project moving, Facebook is now making it easier for users to transfer all their pictures from their Facebook profile to Google Photos.

"There will also be potential privacy issues with data portability as users will potentially take risks when they move data to third parties, so companies and regulators will need to develop ways that deal with rogue actors".

Now, however, Facebook is building on "the principle of data portability, which gives people control and choice while also encouraging innovation".

Lawmakers in the United States are pushing a bill that will improve online data portability.

People will be able to access the new tool in Facebook settings in the same place where they can download all other information.

The company, which said it has upped its communications about data and security-related disclosures over the last two years, emphasised in a Monday blog post that it was working to upgrade systems and build privacy into new products.

"We believe the Data Transfer Project shows that industry-led solutions can help make data portability a reality", Mr Satterfield said.

The tool will then be rolled out worldwide in the first half of 2020.
