Police are on the scene of a "critical incident" at a suburban Milwaukee high school, but say the building is safe and a suspect is in custody.

A school resource officer on Monday shot an armed 17 year old at a high school classroom in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a Milwaukee suburb, police said. The Waukesha mayor's office said that one suspect is in police custody, and it is believed to be an "isolated incident". "An officer was forced to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect".

There is no word yet on how bad the student, whose name has not been released, was injured.

The officer had rushed to a classroom after a student saw a classmate with a handgun, authorities said.

Parents gathered outside and hugged students as they streamed out of the school in Waukesha, which is about 18 miles (30 kilometers) west of Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports shots were exchanged between a student and a school resource officer.

Students who streamed out of the school about 11:15 a.m. said a drill was announced and they took cover under desks and teachers barricaded doors. We are not seeking anybody else we have no other persons of interest.
