Thousands of homes don't have any heating after a gas mains failure in central Scotland. Twin electric cooker hobs and electric heaters are available to the most vulnerable in the affected areas from Camelon Community Centre.

"If your meter is outside your home - in a white or brown meter box - we won't need you to give us access".

SGN, the gas distributor for the area said on Monday morning: "Thanks to Falkirk residents for your support yesterday".

SGN expects the crisis to last "some days", and homes affected will have to be reconnected individually - presenting potential difficulties for people who have work or other commitments.

Scores of residents have taken to social media to vent their frustration at what they see as a lack of information about how families with children, or the sick and elderly, are supposed to cope in sub-zero temperatures.

They've said engineers were working to fix the problem but there was no timescale for when gas would be restored.

"We're not getting advice and information on the website is quite vague".

"We have engineers on site and we'll be opening a customer incident centre in the local community in the next few hours".

An SGN statement says: "Around 8,000 homes in Carronshore, Larbert, Skinflats and Stenhousemuir are without gas today, after a fault at our gas governor". We appreciate it's not easy being without your gas supply in the cold weather and we're doing all we can to get your gas back on as quickly as possible.
