Here is how the Cavaliers pulled off their first win over the Hokies since 2003. In a nail-biter that came down to a 42-yard field goal by Hokie kicker Brian Johnson, Virginia fell 34-31 in overtime at Lane Stadium.

The No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies and Virginia Cavaliers clash Friday at Charlottesville, Va., with the victor staking claim to the ACC Coastal Division championship, as well as the 2019 Commonwealth Cup trophy.

This was the fourth straight season that Notre Dame played the eventual ACC Coastal Division champion, winning the last two of those match-ups (Pittsburgh 2018, Virginia Tech 2019).

Both defenses rank among the nation's top 20 in sacks per game. Eli Hanback recovered a fumble in the end zone to seal the game. McClease also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Hooker opened the third quarter with a 30-yard pitch to Damon Hazelton in the midfield. Mendenhall expressed his respect for Fuente following the game and the level of effort both coaches went through to finally congratulate one another.

Perkins threw for 311 yards and ran for another 164 including 2 first half touchdowns that boosted the Cavaliers to a 13-6 halftime lead.

Five different Hokies touched the ball in the eight-play drive. He had one touchdown pass and one interception.

The game became a shooting after that.

UVA went 75 yards and Perkins had 70 of them, all on the ground. Tre Turner had seven receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown.

That advantage was short-lived with Perkins hitting Terrell Jana for a 37-yard gain and Hasise Duboise for a 30-yard gain to put Virginia back in the red zone.

UVA knotted the score at 27-27 on a 2-yard TD run by Wayne Taulapapa with 13:30 to go.

The teams exchanged field goals to reach 30-30.

Delaney said backup kick AJ Mejia gave him some words of encouragement before the critical field goal.

Perkins hit Billy Kemp IV for a 25-yard touchdown reception.

Perkins warned Tech before they fought.

The second half was all about the passing attack from Perkins and Virginia Tech's Hendon Hooker. While Perkins is more risky when he tucks the ball to run, Hooker has also had success running and similar success would free things up for their other offensive weapons.

With the fans rushing the field, Mendenhall lost sight of his counterpart, Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente, as he tried to make it across the field to shake hands.

"How fitting after a missed extra point early and I thought that was going to haunt us", he said.

Later in the fourth, Perkins had a 67-yard touchdown run.

The Cavaliers also improved to 9-3 on the season.

With the win, the Cavaliers won the ACC Coastal. Hooker was sacked on three consecutive downs.

Was Virginia Tech going to convert on a third and 19? Robinson's 28 and 35-yard returns were the longest winnings of half of the Hokies.

The Hokies had two turnovers in half. It was the first interception of the Hooker season (124 attempts).
