Tamra McBeath-Riley, 52, was found east of the Stuarts Well area south of Alice Springs late on Sunday afternoon.

The air search continued on Monday for her friends Claire Hockridge, 46, and Phu Tran, 40.

She said: "The information I had was they had very limited food, they had a packet of biscuits and a packet of noodles between them and that obviously didn't last them very long".

They dug a hold underneath the auto to shelter from temperatures of 40C during the day and slept in the vehicle by night. In January, German tourist Monika Billen was found dead near Alice Springs after she disappeared while on a hike.

Ms McBeath-Riley said she made a decision to stay at the waterhole with a dog that she did not think would survive a walk to the Stuart Highway, which connects Australia's north and south coasts.

Meanwhile, her two companions began a 19km trek towards a nearby highway, armed with a Global Positioning System device and a compass. However when their truck turned slowed down in a riverbed, they instantly discovered themselves in a battle for survival, stranded in a distant panorama with little meals and water.

They failed to return that night as planned.

McBeath-Riley said she and her companions found a waterhole.

"When the helicopter found me, I thought that Claire and Phu had reached the highway", she said. That was my immediate thought.

It appeared Ms McBeath-Riley had gone north of the vehicle and the others had gone west. Uncommon tire tracks noticed by a cattle station employee, in addition to a word left contained in the automobile, supplied a breakthrough for searchers.

In the Australian outback, people and towns are few and far between, and Pauline Vicary, police superintendent for Australia's Northern Territory, said the unforgiving region made the search especially complicated. "It's quite a diverse terrain - there's sandy dunes, there's hard clay, there's areas of dense trees but there is also rocks and ranges in the area as well".
