Amazon Braket takes on Microsoft’s quantum computing efforts

At its re:Invent conference, AWS today announced the launch of its Inferentia chips, which it initially announced previous year. "You can build and test your circuits in a simulated environment and then run them on an actual quantum computer", AWS said. Both IBM and Google made massive investments in quantum computing this year, both bringing the technology into the public discussion in October as Google claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy, only to have IBM roundly refute it.

Quantum bits, or qubits, can be set to one and zero at the same time, unlike today's computer bits that are either ones or zeroes.

To do this, Amazon is partnering with D-Wave, IonQ and Rigetti - companies that will do the heavy lifting on the hardware end, with services channelled through to AWS customers.

Results from Braket simulations are stored in AWS' S3 storage service, with resource utilisation being turned off when jobs complete. Bra-ket notation is commonly used to denote quantum mechanical states, and inspired the name of the service.

The AWS Center for Quantum Computing is a new research center at the California Institute of Technology.

For customers who want to be a part of the new technology and problem solving strategies, WS is launching the Amazon Braket service and the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab so that customers can begin learning and experimenting with quantum computing today.

The Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab, meanwhile, will give AWS customers access to quantum experts from Amazon.

Amazon is promising to make powerful quantum computing services available over the web, in contrast with rivals' focus on hardware. "And with our AWS Center for Quantum Computing and academic partnerships, we join the effort across the scientific and industrial communities to help accelerate the promise of quantum computing".
