George Atkinson III, a former football player at Notre Dame and in the NFL, has died at age 27, multiple outlets report. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Atkinson III's twin brother, Josh died just over a year ago and George was dealing with depression since his brother's death. But the former Notre Dame product, whose father George Atkinson played for the Oakland Raiders, had been struggling with the suicide of his twin brother, Josh, who took his own life December 25, 2018, the South Bend Tribune said.

The Atkinson twins played football together at Notre Dame and were members of the 2011 recruiting class. Atkinson III rushed for almost 1,000 yards and had 10 rushing touchdowns during his three seasons with the Fighting Irish.

Atkinson's mother suffered from paranoid schizophrenia when the twins were young and passed away due to complications from Crohn's disease shortly before Josh's death, as George detailed in a personal, open letter to "kids going through time times" in October. Following his brother's death by suicide on Christmas 2018, George wrote that he was institutionalized for self-harm. He admitted he was "still struggling" in the letter. "Now, my daughter, who is only two years old, is my 'why'".

"In the previous year, the Atkinson family have lost both Josh and George Atkinson", Notre Dame Recruiting tweeted.
