With demand expected to be high, Swissmint said another 40,000 coins could be issued in May while a 50 franc gold coin, featuring a different design would also be produced next year. In honor of his achievements, Swissmint will release a 20 Swiss francs silver coin in January.

The 20 franc silver coins will be worth $29.48.

55,000 of the coins, which feature Federer preparing to strike a trademark backhand, will be produced.

In a statement, the Switzerland government said Federer is the best-known personality from the country both on and off the court.

Federer also spoke about the blessing of being a famous tennis player: "Playing on the biggest stadiums around the world, achieving more than my dreams has been great".

The date of issue is scheduled for the 23rd January 2020, and the pre-sale (Uncirculated quality) began on the 2nd December 2019.

The 38-year-old took to Twitter to announce the news and captioned the post as: "Thank you Switzerlandand Swissmint for this incredible honour and privilege". "He has a unique way of embodying likeability, down-to-earthness, success and eloquence", the Swissmint wrote on its site.

Swissmint had earlier introduced commemorative coins celebrating Swiss historical events, people and organizations.

This year's commemorative Swiss coins included the 50th anniversary of the moon landings, the Furka Pass and the roe deer. He holds the most grand slam men's singles titles, 20 of them, and has won 103 singles titles in total so far.

The veteran has gone 237 consecutive weeks as world number one.

Meanwhile, the Swiss ace has had other off-court commemorations as well. In 2012, the German city of Halle, named a street after the 10-time champion here.
