Los Angeles Police Officer Under Investigation After Allegedly Fondling Dead Woman's Breasts

The Los Angeles Police Protective League represents 10,000 LAPD officers.

An unidentified officer with the Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) downtown Central Division was recently placed on leave after a random body camera search allegedly revealed that the officer had fondled the breasts of a dead woman during a residential inspection. Sources say the partner headed back to their squad vehicle to get something, which is when the officer in question allegedly turned his bodycam off and fondled the corpse's breasts.

But, unbeknownst to the officer, body cameras used by the LAPD continue recording for two minutes after the button has been pressed.

Aside from investigating the incident, the department is also looking into the officer's work history. He declined to comment further.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the officers" union, added: "If this allegation is true, then the behavior exhibited by this officer is not only wrong, but extremely disturbing.

Assistant Chief Robert Arcos called the recording "very disturbing".

Chief Michel Moore reached an agreement last month with the union to inspect body-worn camera recordings that don't involve arrests or the use of force.

The official said the footage was uncovered during a random inspection and reaction among the force has been "utter disgust". When the officer restarted the camera at the scene, it saved the preceding two minutes and allegedly caught him abusing the corpse.

Department officials confirmed to local media outlets that the incident took place in November after a pair of male officers were dispatched to a Los Angeles home where a woman thought to be dead had been found.

Police Commissioner Shane Murphy Goldsmith said the aim was to 'identify trends, develop training and hold officers accountable to the highest standard of fair and unbiased policing'. Supervisors would check to make sure that officers aren't rude and that they explain their actions when stopping people, he said.

Prior to the agreement, supervisors could review recordings mostly on a complaint basis, and discipline officers for misconduct discovered in videos.

When LAPD first deployed more than 7,000 body cameras in December 2014, many advocates lauded the move, saying the cams would help increase public trust and police transparency. The department collects almost 14,000 recordings every day.
