Major League Baseball rumors: Phillies ready to outbid Yankees for Zack Wheeler

But Cashman could be losing his backup plan, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports "there is a growing sense in the industry that Wheeler will agree with a team" before the Winter Meetings, which begin Monday in San Diego. The Reds, White Sox and Rangers are also mentioned as possibilities.

Wheeler's free agency doesn't seem on track to drag into 2020.

Wheeler, 29, has received at least one $100 million offer and will land a five-year deal in excess of that amount, according to major-league sources.

Since the New York Mets issued a qualifying offer to Wheeler, the Phillies would have to relinquish their second highest draft pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and 500,000 of worldwide signing bonus pool money.

The Mets could be seeing a lot of Zack Wheeler this season, just not in a blue and orange cap. Notably, he went 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA after the 2018 All-Star Break, which has led more than a few baseball observers to think that in the right situation, his consistent front-line potential could be unlocked.
