New Plex streaming service offers free films and TV shows

Plex's Ad-Supported Free Video on Demand Feature Now Available Worldwide

Plex announced the launch of its ad-supported video on demand feature today.

Content includes thousands of free movies and TV shows from Plex partners like MGM, Warner Bros, Lionsgate, and Legendary.

Current movie titles featured include Lord of War, Rain Man, Raging Bull, The Terminator, and Apocalypse Now, with more to be added. It's a convenient trade-off, and in a crowded streaming space where every subscription sets you back anywhere from $5 to $15 or more, dealing with a few ads in exchange for free streaming seems like a welcome trade-off. The firm promises to "deliver more content to more countries than any other free streaming service to date".

If you're already a Plex user, a new Free to Watch category will be unlocked, allowing you to position it alongside your existing collections. If you've never used Plex before, it has apps on all major smart TVs and streaming boxes, meaning you can add it to your console, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV boxes, as well as iOS and Android devices.

In their press release, Plex describes themselves as "A True One-Stop Media Service", Plex is the world's most comprehensive streaming platform, bringing free, on-demand movies and TV shows together with a user's favorite podcasts, web shows, news, music, over-the-air live and recorded television, as well as personal media collections, all through one handsome interface, from any device or platform. The bad news? Plex Pass customers will still have to put up with ads, just like non-paying customers.

Although certain shows and movies may be unavailable in particular areas due to local content licensing agreements, Plex stated that the "vast majority" of content will be accessible worldwide. "We wanted to offer more entertainment-both classics and new favorites-and do so in a way that is high-quality (for those who care about encoding quality) while serving only about one-third the amount of ads you'd expect on cable television".
