Cleveland sent right-hander Adenys Bautista to Boston in exchange for León, according to Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom.
Leon, 30, has been in the league for eight years, splitting his time between the Washington Nationals and the Red Sox. He started 305 games at catcher for the Red Sox in the last five seasons. Leon was eligible for salary arbitration this year and made $2.5 million last year. Leon is projected to make close to $3 million in arbitration and with the team attempting to cut payroll, that's too much for an underperforming backup catcher.
The Indians also designated right-handed pitcher James Hoyt for assignment in the transaction.
A switch-hitter, Leon has a.221 career batting average with 25 home runs and 123 RBI in 392 games. In 2019, he made seven relief appearances in the Dominican Summer League and seven in the Arizona League, giving up 15 earned runs in 17 1/3 innings pitched for a 7.79 ERA.
