Channel 4 apologises to Boris Johnson for inaccurate 'racist' subtitles

An estimated 1,000 people turned out to see Boris Johnson in Rochester

In the latest row between the broadcaster and the Conservatives, Channel 4 tweeted a clip of the Prime Minister speaking on the campaign trail with the subtitle "people of colour".

The falsely-subtitled clip swiftly went viral on Friday, prompting Channel 4 to issue a correction: "Boris Johnson says "people of talent" not "people of colour".

The free-to-air network claimed the Prime Minister said "people of color" had to be controlled when coming into Britain, when in fact, he had said "people of talent". It quickly attracted furious tweets bashing the head of the UK's Conservative Party, who are also colloquially called "Tories".

Channel 4 News has apologised after a subtitling error wrongly claimed Boris Johnson had discussed whether "people of colour" should be allowed into the United Kingdom, prompting the Conservatives to accuse the channel of being campaigners rather than journalists.

The clip was deleted, and the broadcaster tweeted: "Our earlier tweet was a mistake. We misheard and we apologize".

Cabinet minister Jake Berry accused Channel 4 of publishing an "outrageous smear".

Channel 4 News has been forced to apologise after misquoting Boris Johnson to make him appear racist.

"They are campaigners in this election - inventing the most damaging things possible to further their campaign against Brexit".

"This sort of thing is why so many media organisations have collapsing audiences".
