TikTok Sued for Tracking, Collecting, and Disclosing Data of Children

Hong alleges that the app retrieved her data without permission - including videos that she had created but not shared online - and transferred them to servers run by companies that cooperate with the Chinese government. The lawsuit was filed against the app by The United States district court for the Northern District of IL.

For those unfamiliar with COPPA it expressly forbids any social media company from collecting data from underage users without the consent of their parents. The college student is now seeking further legal advice regarding the issue.

The parent company of TikTok, one of the world's most popular apps, is in trouble again. US officials have expressed worry about the app's growing popularity.

ByteDance, which acquired TikTok in 2017 when it was formerly known as Musical.ly, was being investigated for the manner in which it collected data from children. Following India and China, the United States accounted for the most downloads this year. The company later blamed the controversy on what they call "human moderation error".

The complaint also implied that the shortcomings were especially egregious in light of TIkTok's popularity among children. "In short, TikTok's lighthearted fun comes at a heavy cost", the Lawsuit stated. She claims the app stole a handful of videos she had made but never posted and then sent those videos to servers in China. In early November, the USA government opened a national security investigation into TikTok, according to The New York Times, looking into whether the app was sending data to China. That information would be publicly available for other users to see.

Earlier this year, the FTC reached a $5.7 million settlement with TikTok over COPPA violations.

It can now be recognized as a competitor to Facebook and Instagram.

The TikTok leader is also expected to meet separately with Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn, who pressed TikTok to improve its protection of children's privacy. And that what makes him sound the alarm. Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that the source code from chinese search engine Baidu and Chinese advertising service Igexin.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California last week, alleges that TikTok has "vacuumed up and transferred to servers in China vast quantities of private and personally-identifiable user data", according to Reuters.
