Landeskog scores in return from injury, Avalanche beat Canadiens 3-2

With Julien deciding to go with Carey Price in an Eastern Conference game against the Rangers in New York Friday (7 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN), Primeau faced the Colorado Avalanche, who boast the No. 1 offence in the National Hockey League.

Heading into their meeting Friday night in NY, the Rangers sit three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference chase, with a game in hand.

Montreal got one goal back before the second period ended.

The Montreal Canadiens are amid a disastrous stretch and things took a turn for the worse on Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche.

Brendan Smith scored, and Alexandar Georgiev made 31 saves for NY (14-11-3), which is 6-3-1 in its past 10 games.

"He was excellent", forward Nick Cousins said about Primeau. "For his first game, he didn't really show any nerves".

"Status quo for us", Avs coach Jared Bednar said of all the injuries. "I got on my horse and went to the back of the net and he made a good play, and the puck went right to me and I slammed it home".

Defenceman Ryan Graves opened the scoring when he beat Primeau during a goalmouth scramble after the goalie turned back shots from Cale Makar and Matt Calvert. Landeskog went around Jeff Petry on the right wing and had time to square up and beat Primeau with a left-handed shot.

Backup goaltender Pavel Francouz came up big for the Avalanche with six minutes to play by stopping Artturi Lehkonen's one-timer with the shaft of his stick.

Smith tied the game 1-1 at 2:30 of the second when he scored on a breakaway off a turnover. "We got some saves when we needed them".

The game was a departure from the November 23 meeting between these teams at the Bell Centre. The 19-year-old has accrued just three goals and five points through 22 contests after a 34-point rookie campaign in 2018-19.

Montreal was down a forward 90 seconds into the game when Jesperi Kotkaniemi fell awkwardly in the corner on a hit by Nikita Zadorov.

Artemi Panarin, Lemieux and Jacob Trouba finished the mission for NY and it was a stunning win.

"We played a solid road game", Claude Julien said. Tonight, number 13 played exactly the same amount of minutes as Brendan Gallagher and took 4 shots on goal just like him but his level of effort just wasn't the same.
