Purdue upset: Boilers hand defending champ Virginia first loss of season

Trevion Williams' contributions for Purdue were profound

Jahaad Proctor chipped in 16 and Eric Hunter Jr. added ten points, five rebounds and four assists. Big man Jay Huff averaged about 10 minutes on that team, but nothing like that once the Cavaliers got deep in the NCAAs. And yes, they even got the satisfaction of snapping the Cavaliers' 13-game winning streak, a little more than eight months after Virginia outlasted Purdue in overtime during a classic Elite Eight game in the NCAA Tournament.

The game was billed as a showdown between two of the nation's stingiest defenses, but Purdue dominated from start to finish.

After the teams opened the game with four straight baskets, Purdue dug in, locked down and seized control with a 12-0 run over almost seven minutes to take a 26-9 lead late in the first half.

The Cavaliers, shooting just 37%, had no answer all night for Purdue's defense.

Though Virginia played games last season with the fewest possessions on average, the offense was highly efficient, generating the fifth-most points per possession of any team in the country.

Because Tony Bennett is certifiably a wizard, these Cavaliers had been able to overcome their current offensive limitations by imposing greater offensive limitations on their opponents through seven games.

Purdue: The Boilermakers appear to be hitting their stride just in time for the start of conference play.

While they entered the game ranked No. 5, Virginia's roster doesn't resemble the unit that secured the school's first NCAA championship in April. Virginia was 7 of 22 from the field and 2 of 15 on 3s in the first half. Nothing that happened in an ACC-Big Ten Challenge game was going to change that, but you could feel better for a while if what was left of the Cavaliers could be paid.

The Purdue Boilermakers exacted revenge of the defending national champions of college basketball last night at Mackey Arena. Stefanovic opened the game by making his first three 3s and finished 6 of 11 from beyond the arc. He scored the first nine points of the game for Purdue with three consecutive 3-pointers.

Virginia returns home to host No. 7 North Carolina on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.at John Paul Jones Arena.
